First-generation American and college graduate Katrina Marnin, MS, fell in love with higher education while working towards her master’s degree at Russell Sage College in Albany, New York. After obtaining the degree in Organizational Management, Katrina left her home-state of New York and returned to a place she called home for just a short period of time – Missouri.
“I went to Mizzou for a year in undergrad and really loved Missouri,” said Katrina. “After graduation I decided to move to St. Louis and look for a job in higher education.”
Katrina moved and began working at Logan University, on the admission team. She currently works as Logan’s Associate Dean of Academic Success.
“The academic success team is wonderful. Our entire team’s goal is to ensure the students succeed and have all the proper tools to do so,” said Katrina. “I can say this too, from a student’s perspective as I am now working on my doctorate.”
In addition to working on Logan’s success team, Katrina is also in her third trimester in Logan’s Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Health Professions Education program. This program prepares health care professionals, and professionals working in the health care industry, to become expert educators in their field.
“I’ve always wanted to teach, and as someone actively working with students and individuals in the health care industry, it’s been great to combine these interests and topics,” explained Katrina.
As a Logan employee, Katrina explains that her colleagues and friends encouraged her application to the program.
“Everyone around me who completed the program, helped with it or taught in it told me I would love it and it would be a great fit,” said Katrina. “It’s been amazing so far.”
The curriculum and topics taught in the Ed.D. program impressed Katrina, but her fellow students and professors did as well.
“Everyone is so invested in the program and cares about the information presented,” explained Katrina. “I have learned so much and the faculty is always willing to listen, answer any questions and give feedback on my work.”
Logan’s Ed.D. program is an asynchronous, online program allowing students to complete their work on their own time. In the final trimester of the program, students must complete an Applied Research Project and Practicum (online, or at their home institution).
“The faculty are always preparing you and helping you get ready for what’s ahead. Even though I am only in my third trimester, I have already begun thinking and prepping for my final research project,” said Katrina.
With a job centered around helping students succeed, and eventually a degree dedicated to helping them learn, Katrina’s passion for impacting future generations is clear.
After completing the Ed.D. program, Katrina hopes to remain in higher education, continue her professional growth and someday teach a class of her own.
